قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
SAY: "I seek refuge with the Sustainer of men, (1)
مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
"the Sovereign of men, (2)
إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ
"the God of men, (3)
مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
"from the evil of the whispering, elusive tempter (4)
الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
who whispers in the hearts of men (5)
مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
"from all [temptation to evil by] invisible forces as well as men," (6)
- From the mischief of the Whisperer6309 (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper),-
- 6309 Evil insinuates itself in all sorts of insidious ways from within so as to sap man's will, which was given to man by Allah. This power of evil may be Satan or his host of evil ones, or evil men or the evil inclinations within man's own will: for there are "evil ones among men and Jinns, inspiring each other with flowery discourses by way of deception" (6:112). They secredy whisper evil and then withdraw, to make their net the more subtle and alluring (see also n. 941).
