TRULY, to a happy state shall attain the believers: (1)
those who humble themselves in their prayer, (2)
and who turn away from all that is frivolous, (3)
and who are intent on inner purity; (4)
and who are mindful of their chastity, (5)
[not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses – that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, (6)
whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; (7)
and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges, (8)
and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. (9)
It is they, they who shall be the inheritors (10)
that will inherit the paradise; [and] therein shall they abide. (11)
NOW, INDEED, We create man out of the essence of clay, (12)
and then We cause him to remain as a drop of sperm in [the womb's] firm keeping, (13)
and then We create out of the drop of sperm a germ-cell, and then We create out of the germ-cell an embryonic lump, and then We create within the embryonic lump bones, and then We clothe the bones with flesh – and then We bring [all] this into being as a new creation: hallowed, therefore, is God, the best of artisans! (14)
And then, behold! after all this, you are destined to die; (15)
and then, behold! you shall be raised from the dead on Resurrection Day. (16)
And, indeed, We have created above you seven [celestial] orbits; and never are We unmindful of [any aspect of Our] creation. (17)
And We send down water from the skies in accordance with a measure [set by Us], and then We cause it to lodge in the earth: but, behold, We are most certainly able to withdraw this [blessing]! (18)
And by means of this [water] We bring forth for you gardens of date-palms and vines, wherein you have fruit abundant and whereof you eat, (19)
as well as a tree that issues from [the lands adjoining] Mount Sinai, yielding oil and relish for all to eat. (20)
And, behold, in the cattle [too] there is indeed a lesson for you: We give you to drink of that [milk] which is within their bellies; and you derive many [other] uses from them: for you eat of their flesh, (21)
and by them – as by the ships [over the sea] – you are borne [overland]. (22)
- and then We create out of the drop of sperm a germ-cell, and then We create out of the germ-cell an embryonic lump, and then We create within the embryonic lump bones, and then We clothe the bones with flesh - and then We bring [all] this into being as a new creation:5 hallowed, therefore, is God, the best of artisans!6
- 5 Lit., "as another creature", i.e., existing independently of the mother's body.
- 6 Lit., "the best of creators". As Tabari points out, the Arabs apply the designation "creator" to every artisan (sani') - a usage also current in European languages with reference to the "creation" of works of art and imagination. Since God is the only Creator in the real, primary sense of this word, the phrase ahsan al-khaliqin must be understood in this secondary sense of the term khaliq (cf. Taj al-'Arus, art. khalaqa).
- Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature.2874 So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
- 2874 From a mere animal, we now consider man as man. Is it not a Sign of wonder in itself that from dry dust (turab, 22:5) or inorganic matter should be made protoplasm (moist clay or organic matter); from it should grow a new animal life; and out of it should grow human life, with all its capacities and responsibilities? Man carries within himself Signs of Allah's wisdom and power, and he can see them every day in the universe around him.
-
Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
— Abdullah Yusuf Ali -
Then fashioned We the drop a clot, then fashioned We the clot a little lump, then fashioned We the little lump bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!
— Marmaduke Pickthall -

— M. Habib Shakir -
Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. — Taqiuddin Hilali and M. Mohsin Khan -

— Abdul-Majid Daryabadi -
Then We created of the drop, a clot (of congealed blood) and We created the clot into bitesize tissue, then We created the bitesize tissue into bones, thenWe clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it an other creation. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators!
— Hasan Qaribullah and Ahmed Darwish -

— Ayub Khan -

— Sher Ali -

then changed the sperm drop into a clot of blood and the clot into a piece of flesh: then turned the piece of flesh into bones: then clothed the bones with flesh:{{12}} and then brought him forth as quite a different creation (from the embryo).{{13}} So blessed is Allah, the best of allcreators.{{14}}
