WHEN THE SUN is shrouded in darkness, (1)
and when the stars lose their light, (2)
and when the mountains are made to vanish, (3)
and when she-camels big with young, about to give birth, are left untended, (4)
and when all beasts are gathered together, (5)
and when the seas boil over, (6)
and when all human beings are coupled [with their deeds], (7)
and when the girl-child that was buried alive is made to ask (8)
for what crime she had been slain, (9)
and when the scrolls [of men's deeds] are unfolded, (10)
and when heaven is laid bare, (11)
and when the blazing fire [of hell] is kindled bright, (12)
and when paradise is brought into view: (13)
[on that Day] every human being will come to know what he has prepared [for himself]. (14)
BUT NAY! I call to witness the revolving stars, (15)
the planets that run their course and set, (16)
and the night as it darkly falls, (17)
and the morn as it softly breathes: (18)
behold, this [divine writ] is indeed the [inspired] word of a noble Apostle, (19)
with strength endowed, secure with Him who in almightiness is enthroned (20)
[the word] of one to be heeded, and worthy of trust! (21)
For this fellow-man of yours is not a madman: (22)
he truly beheld [the angel – beheld] him on the clear horizon; (23)
and he is not one to begrudge others the knowledge [of whatever has been revealed to him] out of that which is beyond the reach of human perception. (24)
Nor is this [message] the word of any satanic force accursed. (25)
Whither, then, will you go? (26)
This [message] is no less than a reminder to all mankind – (27)
to every one of you who wills to walk a straight way. (28)
But you cannot will it unless God, the Sustainer of all the worlds, wills [to show you that way]. (29)
- And the Night as it dissipates;5986
- 5986 How the Night gradually declines after its height at midnight! It seems gradually to steal away, and as Dawn approaches, to merge into Day. So a soul in spiritual darkness gradually awakes to its spiritual Dawn through Revelation.

And the Night as it dissipates;
— Abdullah Yusuf Ali -
And the close of night,
— Marmaduke Pickthall -
And the night when it departs,
— M. Habib Shakir -
And by the night as it departs;
— Taqiuddin Hilali and M. Mohsin Khan -
And by the night when it departeth,
— Abdul-Majid Daryabadi -
by the night when it approaches
— Hasan Qaribullah and Ahmed Darwish -
and by the night when it deepens,
— Ayub Khan -
And I call to witness the night as it draws to a close,
— Sher Ali -
and the night as it darkly falls,
— Muhammad Asad -
by the night swarming,
— Arthur Arberry -
and by the night as it recedes,
— Abu'l Ala Maududi
