Tā. Sīn. Mīm. (1)
تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ
THESE ARE MESSAGES of the divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth. (2)
لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ
Wouldst thou, perhaps, torment thyself to death [with grief] because they [who live around thee] refuse to believe [in it]? (3)
إِنْ نَشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ آيَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَاقُهُمْ لَهَا خَاضِعِينَ
Had We so willed, We could have sent down unto them a message from the skies, so that their necks would [be forced to] bow down before it in humility. (4)
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ ذِكْرٍ مِنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ
[But We have not willed it:] and so, whenever there comes unto them any fresh reminder from the Most Gracious, they [who are blind of heart] always turn their backs upon it: (5)
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنْبَاءُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
thus, indeed, have they given the lie [to this message as well]. But [in time] they will come to understand what it was that they were wont to deride! (6)
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ
Have they, then, never considered the earth – how much of every noble kind [of life] We have caused to grow thereon? (7)
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
In this, behold, there is a message [unto men], even though most of them will not believe [in it]. (8)
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
But, verily, thy Sustainer – He alone – is almighty, a dispenser of grace! (9)

- 1 The letters ta, sin and mim are among the mysterious, disjointed letter-symbols (al muqatta'at) preceding some of the chapters of the Qur'an (see Appendix II).

- 3137 This is a combination of three Abbreviated Letters, as to which, generally, see Appendix I, printed at the end of S. 2- This particular combination occurs here and at the head of S. 28, while the intervening Surah 27 has it in the syncopated form Ta' Sin. None of the explanatory conjectures which I have seen carries conviction for me. If the letters stand for Tur Sinin (Mount Sinai) and Musa (Moses), whose story fills a large part of this Surah, why is the letter Mim omitted in S. 27. where the same meaning would apply? There is, however, one fact to which I should like to draw attention. There are eleven sections in this Surah, and eight of them end with the word Rahim (with the final Mim). The three exceptions are sections 2 and 3, and section 11. But sections 2 and 3 are part of the story of Moses, which is completed in section 4, and that ends with "Rahim", The main argument in section 11 ends at verse 217, which ends with Rahim. We can say that the whole Surah is based on a refrain in the word "Rahim". Whether this has any bearing on our present enquiry I cannot say. My own position is that where we have material, we should pursue our researches, but we should never be dogmatic in such matters, as some Mysteries can never be solved by mere research.
